Patna, 18th Sept: Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) Bihar president Dilip Jaiswal on Thursday hit out at the Congress party over an AI-generated video of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s late mother, Heeraben Modi, calling it a “shameful act” that reflects the “declining political integrity” of the INDIA alliance.
Jaiswal’s remarks came after the Patna High Court directed the Congress to take down the controversial video from all social media platforms. The video, circulated by Bihar Congress, showed an artificial intelligence depiction of the Prime Minister’s late mother scolding him over his politics — sparking outrage within the BJP and its allies.
“I welcome the Patna High Court order. The way they posted an AI video on the Prime Minister and his mother, the Congress Party has committed a shameful act. The INDI alliance is losing its political integrity. After this Patna High Court order, it is expected they will learn a lesson,” Jaiswal told reporters.
He further said that the court’s intervention sets an important precedent.
“This order, I think, is a good message for the future. It will also curb the misuse of social media,” he added.
A Growing Political Flashpoint
The AI video controversy has emerged at a politically sensitive time, with Bihar heading for assembly elections later this year. The ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA), led by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, is preparing to retain power, while the opposition INDIA bloc, comprising Congress and Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), is positioning itself as a challenger.
In neighbouring Uttar Pradesh, state minister and NDA ally OP Rajbhar voiced confidence in the alliance’s prospects, asserting that the NDA would comfortably form the next government in Bihar.
“An NDA coalition government will be formed in Bihar and we will fight together,” Rajbhar said.
The Debate on AI and Ethics in Politics
The Patna High Court’s decision also reignites the debate around the ethical use of artificial intelligence in political campaigns. Experts warn that AI-generated deepfakes have the potential to distort political discourse, mislead voters, and cross ethical boundaries when personal lives of leaders are dragged into public campaigns.
For the BJP, the incident has become a rallying point to question Congress’s strategy and the credibility of the INDIA alliance. For the Congress, the High Court’s intervention is a setback at a time when it is striving to consolidate opposition unity in Bihar.
The Road Ahead
With election campaigning expected to intensify in the coming weeks, the controversy underscores the shifting battleground in Indian politics — where not just policies and promises, but also technology and misinformation, are shaping narratives.
As Bihar braces for a high-stakes electoral contest, the BJP hopes the backlash against the AI video will strengthen its case against the opposition’s credibility, while the Congress will likely face pressure to recalibrate its campaign strategy.
