New Delhi, 14th Feb. In the latest developments ahead of the Rajya Sabha elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its coalition partner, the Shiv Sena (Shinde) faction, have announced their nominees for the prestigious positions.
The BJP has put forth its President, JP Nadda, as a candidate from Gujarat, while former Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan will represent his home state. Additionally, the Shiv Sena has nominated Milind Deora as their candidate from Maharashtra.
Notably, both Ashok Chavan and Milind Deora have recently switched allegiance from the Congress party to their respective new political houses. Chavan, who served as the Chief Minister of Maharashtra, joined the BJP just a day before the nomination announcement, marking a significant transition in his political career.
JP Nadda, currently a Rajya Sabha member from Himachal Pradesh, will contest from Gujarat due to the BJP’s insufficient legislative strength in the Congress-ruled hill state to secure a seat. This strategic move underscores the party’s efforts to ensure representation from key regions.
With the elections for 56 Rajya Sabha seats scheduled for February 27 across 15 states, the political landscape is heating up. Uttar Pradesh leads with the highest number of seats at 10.
Other prominent contenders include former Congress President Sonia Gandhi, vying for a seat from Rajasthan, and Union Ministers L Murugan and Ashwini Vaishnaw. Murugan is set to contest from Madhya Pradesh, while Vaishnaw has been nominated from Odisha.
