In a startling accusation, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Dilip Ghosh has leveled serious allegations against the Trinamool Congress (TMC), claiming that their influential figure, Sheikh Shahjahan, accused in the Sandeshkhali violence and atrocities against women, remains at large due to his pivotal role in garnering votes and finances for the party. Ghosh further implicated top officials of the West Bengal police, accusing them of aiding Shahjahan’s evasion of arrest.

Ghosh’s accusations surfaced amidst escalating tensions in Sandeshkhali, where an independent fact-finding committee led by former Chief Justice of Patna High Court L Narasimha Reddy was detained by West Bengal Police en-route to investigate alleged incidents of atrocities against women.

The unrest in Sandeshkhali intensified as women took to the streets demanding the immediate arrest of TMC leader Ajit Maity, whom they allege to be associated with Shahjahan and implicated in land grabbing and extortion activities. In response to the mounting pressure, the Trinamool Congress removed Ajit Maity from his position as TMC Anchal President.

Echoing similar sentiments, West Bengal’s Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari accused the state police of refraining from arresting Sheikh Shahjahan to maintain control over votes, highlighting the political implications in the region. Adhikari expressed hope that the case would be transferred to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), leading to Shahjahan’s swift incarceration.

Adhikari further condemned the imposition of Section 144 by the state government, alleging it to be a politically motivated move aimed at curbing the activities of BJP leaders. He emphasized the need for stringent action against Shahjahan, calling for capital punishment and urging expedited investigations by the CBI and National Investigation Agency (NIA).

In response to the allegations, a Trinamool Congress spokesperson refuted the claims, asserting the party’s commitment to upholding law and order in the state and condemning the politicization of the issue by opposition parties.

The developments in Sandeshkhali have drawn national attention, with concerns raised over the state of governance and the impartiality of law enforcement agencies in West Bengal.
