Chandigarh, 30th Jan. In a closely watched battle, BJP candidate Manoj Kumar Sonkar emerged as the winner of the Chandigarh mayoral election held on Tuesday. This election marked the first major contest between the INDIA bloc and the BJP. Sonkar defeated the joint candidate of AAP and Congress, Kuldeep Singh, after 8 votes for Singh were deemed invalid.
Sonkar secured a total of 16 votes out of the 36 votes cast, including the vote of ex-officio member Kirron Kher MP. On the other hand, Singh, the INDIA bloc candidate, secured 12 votes, with 8 votes being declared invalid.
There was chaos in the House as AAP and Congress protested against the decision to invalidate 8 votes, which ultimately led to Sonkar’s victory in the 35-member Chandigarh Municipal Corporation.
The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) announced that they will challenge the decision to invalidate the 8 votes in the Punjab and Haryana High Court.
In the previous election, BJP won 14 out of 35 seats, AAP had 13 councillors, Congress had seven representatives, and Siromani Akalidal had 1 member in the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation.
