In response to the Supreme Court’s decision declaring the electoral bonds scheme unconstitutional, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) stood firm in defense of the initiative, citing its aim to enhance transparency in political funding.

Former law minister and BJP leader, Ravi Shankar Prasad, reiterated the party’s respect for the Supreme Court’s verdict while underscoring the need for a thorough examination of the judgment’s intricate details before formulating an official response. Prasad highlighted the government’s commitment, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, to modernizing electoral finance, with the introduction of electoral bonds representing a pivotal step in this direction.

The BJP spokesperson, Nalin Kohli, condemned opposition parties for politicizing the issue, attributing their criticism to a lack of alternative leadership to Prime Minister Modi and the transformative governance delivered by his administration. Kohli emphasized India’s economic ascent under Modi’s leadership and dismissed allegations of political maneuvering, asserting that the electoral bonds scheme was crafted to address the longstanding challenge of black money in elections.

Acknowledging the Supreme Court’s ruling, Kohli affirmed the BJP’s adherence to the judiciary’s decisions while reaffirming the government’s commitment to upholding democratic principles. He underscored the essence of the court’s directives, emphasizing the imperative of transparency in electoral finance.

The Supreme Court’s verdict resonated across the political spectrum, with opposition parties lauding the decision as a victory against corruption.

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge hailed the court’s stance against what he labeled as the Modi government’s “black money conversion” scheme, expressing hope for the cessation of such contentious practices in the future.
