Jaipur, 27th Jan. BJP and Congress councillors clashed during a general meeting of the Jaipur Greater Municipal Corporation (JGMC) over land leases on a 100-foot road in the city’s Jagatpura neighborhood. The confrontation unfolded as BJP and Congress councillors clashed in a heated exchange, pushing, shoving, and shouting slogans while waving placards, including those targeting the Mayor, Saumya Gurjar, and chanting ‘murdabad.’
The meeting quickly spiraled into chaos after BJP councillors, including Ramswaroop Meena and Shravani Devi, raised concerns over land leases in Jagatpura. The BJP demanded action against the government official responsible for allegedly issuing incorrect land leases in the area, which is rapidly developing with residential colonies, shopping malls, and commercial units. Criticism has mounted over the lack of town planning, particularly regarding permits for shops along the 100-foot road, which is expected to be a key model for urban development.
In a dramatic turn, BJP’s Meena even prostrated himself before the Mayor to push his demands. Meanwhile, Congress councillor Shravani Devi’s dispute with a rival lawmaker escalated when the rival tore a paper out of her hands, leading to a fierce altercation between the two.
The BJP, which controls the state government following its win in the November 2023 elections, has 87 councillors in its camp. The Congress, with 53 councillors, is pushing for the cancellation of land leases in the area. The incident prompted a 30-minute break in the meeting, after which proceedings resumed amid continued disruptions.
This was the first meeting of the councillors in 18 months, and tensions ran high as both parties attempted to assert control over the key issue of land use in Jagatpura.
