New Delhi, 14th May. Monday marked the passing of Sushil Kumar Modi, a prominent member of the BJP and a former Deputy Chief Minister of Bihar. His age was seventy-two. The cancer was attacking the former Bihar Deputy Chief Minister. Born on January 5, 1952, Modi has been a lifelong member of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). In 1973, he earned his B.Sc. (Hons) in Botany from Patna Science College. He dropped out of graduate school to work on the social movement that Jai Prakash Narayan had founded.
Modi began his political career at Patna University as a student activist. In 1973, he was appointed as the Patna University Students’ Union’s general secretary. Five arrests were made of him during the Emergency and JP Movement and spent 19 months behind bars.
Over the course of his three-decade political career, Sushil Modi has held a number of roles, including member of the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha as well as MLA and MLC. He held the position of Deputy Chief Minister for the state of Bihar twice, from 2017 to 2020 and from 2005 to 2013.
In 1990, Sushil Modi became involved in politics and ran a successful campaign for the Patna Central Assembly. He won elections again in 1995 and 2000. He was appointed Chief Whip of the BJP Bihar Legislative Party in 1990. He was elected to the Parliament in 2004 from the Bhagalpur constituency. Nevertheless, he left the Lok Sabha in 2005 and became Bihar’s Deputy Chief Minister. He was assigned the Finance Portfolio in addition to other divisions.
He remained in his position as the state’s Deputy Chief Minister following the NDA’s victory in the 2010 Bihar elections.
Modi was the primary force for the collapse of the JDU-RJD Grand Alliance. Modi is credited with uncovering the fodder scam in Bihar through his PIL. For around 11 years, Modi assisted Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and the leader of the Janata Dal (United).
He was elected to the Rajya Sabha from Bihar without opposition on December 8, 2020, to take Ram Vilas Paswan’s seat, which became vacant.
Due to his continuous fight with cancer, Modi declared in April 2024 that he would not be able to take part in the forthcoming Lok Sabha election.
He declared, “I have been battling cancer for the past six months,” in a post on X (previously Twitter). I thought the moment had come to share it with others. During the Lok Sabha elections, I shall be unable to take any action. I have fully informed the Prime Minister.”
Throughout his three decades in politics, Modi has significantly impacted the political landscape of the state of Bihar and played a key part in forming its political climate.
