Patna, 14th Nov: The BJP–JDU-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has registered a significant early advantage in the Bihar Assembly Elections 2025, crossing the majority mark in the initial rounds of counting on Friday (November 14). According to early trends, the alliance is leading on 122 seats, the exact number required to form the government in the 243-member Assembly.
While these numbers are subject to change as counting progresses through the day, the early momentum has given the NDA a psychological lead in what was widely anticipated to be a tightly fought contest between the ruling coalition and the opposition Mahagathbandhan, led by the RJD, Congress, and Left parties.
A Close Battle Expected Despite Early NDA Surge
The early swing in favour of the NDA has energised its cadre, but several constituencies remain locked in neck-and-neck battles. With thousands of postal ballots and dozens of counting rounds yet to conclude, both alliances remain cautiously watchful.
Analysts suggest that the NDA’s strong early showing may be linked to favourable booth-level trends, a coordinated campaign across rural belts, and the consolidation of votes in key strongholds. However, the Mahagathbandhan continues to perform competitively in several high-stakes constituencies, keeping the electoral battle alive.
Two-Phase Voting Sets the Stage for a Crucial Verdict
This year’s Bihar Assembly elections were held in two phases, marking one of the most extensive polling exercises in the state’s recent history.
- Phase 1 (November 6): 121 constituencies
- Phase 2 (November 11): 122 constituencies
The Election Commission of India had announced the counting date—November 14—more than a month earlier, ensuring adequate time for poll preparations and security deployment.
With 243 total seats and 122 required for a simple majority, the 2025 election has become a decisive moment for Bihar’s political future, particularly with the NDA seeking to extend its governance and the Mahagathbandhan hoping to reclaim lost ground.
Over 7.4 Crore Eligible Voters, 14 Lakh Voting for the First Time
Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar earlier revealed that more than 7.4 crore voters were eligible to participate in the 2025 Bihar Assembly elections. This included 14 lakh first-time voters, a demographic expected to influence key constituencies.
Kumar assured that the electoral process would remain transparent, peaceful, and secure, with extensive monitoring measures in place across all polling centers.
ECI Introduces 17 New Initiatives to Strengthen Polling Process
In a bid to enhance the integrity and efficiency of the election process, the Election Commission rolled out 17 new initiatives this year. Among the most notable were:
- Mandatory webcasting at every polling booth to increase transparency.
- A mobile phone-deposit facility to prevent misuse and ensure orderly conduct within booths.
The Commission stated that these steps were aimed at bolstering voter confidence and ensuring flawless monitoring of polling activity.
What Comes Next
As counting continues, the early trends show the NDA in a favourable position with the majority mark already crossed. However, both alliances are bracing for possible fluctuations as more rounds are completed.
The final results, including constituency-wise margins and statewide vote share, will be announced by the Election Commission later in the day.
