Bihar Election 2025: Folk Singer Maithili Thakur Makes High-Profile Political Debut as BJP Candidate from Alinagar

Alinagar, Darbhanga, 14th Nov: Popular Maithili and Bhojpuri folk singer Maithili Thakur has officially stepped into electoral politics, emerging as one of the youngest and most talked-about candidates in the 2025 Bihar Assembly elections. Contesting as a BJP candidate from Alinagar in Darbhanga district, the 24-year-old cultural icon has quickly transformed the constituency into one of the most watched electoral battles in Mithilanchal.

Born on July 25, 2000, Maithili Thakur has earned national and international acclaim for her folk performances, classical training, and commitment to preserving the Maithili and Bhojpuri musical heritage. Her candidacy is widely seen as the BJP’s strategic push to deepen its cultural and youth outreach across north Bihar, particularly in a region where traditional identities play a significant role in electoral behaviour.

From Music Platforms to Political Stage

Hailing from Benipatti in Madhubani district, just 35 km from Alinagar, Thakur rose to fame alongside her brothers Rishav and Ayachi Thakur. Their musical trio revived several traditional songs, earning her recognition including the Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar from the Sangeet Natak Akademi.

Her decision to join the BJP just two days before filing her nomination sparked wide public interest. Speaking to reporters after her induction, she said, “Whatever job the party assigns to me, I will do it with full dedication.” Her entry has injected fresh energy into the BJP’s campaign machinery, especially among youth and first-time voters.

Alinagar: A Contest of Culture, Caste, and Charisma

Maithili Thakur’s primary challenger is Binod Mishra of the RJD, a veteran local leader and the 2020 runner-up. While Mishra is banking on traditional support networks and issues such as employment, rural infrastructure, and welfare schemes, Thakur brings a different kind of influence—celebrity appeal, cultural symbolism, and youth mobilization.

Alinagar, situated in the heart of the Mithilanchal region, has a richly diverse population including Brahmins, Yadavs, Muslims, and extremely backward classes such as Mallahs and Paswans. Historically, the seat has leaned towards the RJD, though it witnessed a shift in 2020 when Mishri Lal Yadav, elected through the Vikassheel Insaan Party (VIP), later joined the BJP. This year’s contest blends political arithmetic with cultural identity, drawing intense attention from both parties.

Education and Public Profile

Maithili Thakur’s educational journey has played an important role in shaping her public identity. After completing her early schooling in Madhubani, her family moved to Delhi to support her growing musical ambitions. She studied at Bal Bhavan International School in Dwarka, a CBSE institution known for nurturing artistic talent.

For higher education, she attended Atma Ram Sanatan Dharma College (ARSD College) under Delhi University—ranked among the top institutions in the country, including a 7th-place ranking in the NIRF 2025 report. Her academic background, combined with her musical excellence, has positioned her as a unique and multidimensional public figure.

Affidavit Reveals Nearly ₹4 Crore in Assets

According to her 2025 election affidavit, Maithili Thakur’s total assets amount to almost ₹4 crore, including both movable and immovable properties. These figures reflect her successful music career, which has spanned live performances, digital content, global tours, and cultural awards.

As polling in Alinagar concluded and counting nears, the constituency stands at the intersection of tradition and transition. Whether Maithili Thakur’s artistic legacy will translate into political success remains to be seen, but her arrival has undeniably reshaped the political landscape of Mithilanchal—bringing a rare blend of melody, identity, and electoral ambition to Bihar’s political stage.
