Guwahati, 22nd Feb: In a major political development in Assam, former President of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC), Bhupen Borah has joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Welcoming him into the party fold, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma described the move as the beginning of a new political journey for Borah. He acknowledged Borah’s three-decade-long association with the Congress and his contributions to the party.

“Today, former APCC President Bhupen Borah has joined the BJP. He served the Congress for 30 years and made substantial contributions. From today, a new chapter begins in his political life. With the BJP’s ‘Nation First’ policy at the forefront, we will work together for the development of the state and the country,” Sarma said.

Bhupen Borah had a long and active political career within the Congress, holding various organizational responsibilities and serving as state president. His switch to the BJP is being viewed by political observers as a development that could alter electoral dynamics in Assam ahead of upcoming elections.

Analysts suggest that Borah’s departure may weaken the Congress at the organizational level, while strengthening the BJP’s position in the state. The move also comes amid reports of internal differences within the Assam Congress in recent months.

While Borah has not yet issued a detailed public statement explaining his decision, political circles are linking the move to both personal strategy and shifting alignments within state politics.

The BJP leadership has described Bora’s entry as a sign of growing confidence in the party’s ideology and governance model. Chief Minister Sarma reiterated that under the party’s “Nation First” approach, leaders and workers would collectively work for Assam’s progress.

The development comes at a time when political activity in Assam is intensifying, with parties recalibrating strategies ahead of the next electoral cycle. Borah’s induction into the BJP has stirred fresh debate over the evolving political equations in the state.
