Bhopal, 20th Dec: Union Minister Manohar Lal and Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav on Saturday inaugurated the Bhopal Metro, marking a major milestone in India’s urban transport journey.

With the commencement of Metro operations in Bhopal, the city has become the 26th in the country to have an operational Metro network. India’s total operational Metro length has now reached 1,090 km, reflecting rapid progress in modern urban mobility infrastructure.

The Bhopal Metro, with a total planned length of 30.8 km, comprises two corridors — the Orange Line (16.74 km) and the Blue Line (14.16 km) — along with one depot. The project aims to make urban travel faster, cleaner and more convenient, while reducing traffic congestion and pollution in the capital city of Madhya Pradesh.

The first phase inaugurated today covers the Orange Line Priority Corridor, a stretch of around 7 km featuring eight elevated stations — AIIMS, Alkapuri, DRM Office, Rani Kamlapati, MP Nagar, Board Office Chauraha, Kendriya Vidyalaya and Subhash Nagar. This corridor is expected to ease traffic on some of Bhopal’s busiest routes and significantly improve daily commuting.

Designed with a strong focus on safety, accessibility and passenger comfort, the Bhopal Metro is equipped with high-speed lifts and escalators, dedicated facilities for Divyangjan, AI-based CCTV surveillance, emergency communication systems, platform screen doors and advanced Grade-4 signalling. Fully air-conditioned coaches with mobile charging points and real-time audio-visual information systems further enhance the travel experience.

Officials said the Bhopal Metro represents a decisive step towards smart, green and sustainable urban development. By promoting environment-friendly public transport, the project is expected to improve quality of life and help Bhopal emerge as a modern, accessible and future-ready capital city.
