Bharat’s Security Record Transformed: Terror Attacks Drop Sharply Under BJP

“How Bharat’s Proactive Security Strategy Under BJP Has Significantly Reduced Terror Attacks.”

New Delhi, 15th  November: The history of terrorism in Bharat starkly contrasts the two major political eras of the last two decades. During Congress-led governments, the country experienced a relentless series of devastating terror attacks, whereas under the BJP government since 2014, the frequency and scale of such attacks have significantly diminished. This article explores the facts and narratives surrounding Bharat’s security record, highlighting how political perspectives shape public discourse on national safety.

The Congress Years: A Decade Marked by Terror Tragedies

Between 2004 and 2014, Bharat grappled with frequent and high-profile terrorist attacks that shook the nation’s core. Incidents such as the 2008 Mumbai 26/11 attacks, the 2007 Samjhauta Express bombing, and numerous other blasts and shootings created an atmosphere of persistent fear and insecurity. Official data indicates over 9,000 terror strikes during this period, with thousands of casualties and injuries.

Critics attribute much of this era’s insecurity to slow or ineffective responses and a policy approach described as “restraint,” where action was often limited to diplomatic measures rather than decisive military or intelligence retaliation. Such a stance arguably emboldened terror networks operating both within and across Bharat’s borders.

The Rise of a New Security Paradigm Under BJP

With Narendra Modi’s ascension to power in 2014, Bharat adopted a markedly tougher approach toward terrorism. High-impact operations like the 2016 surgical strikes in Uri and the 2019 Balakot airstrikes post-Pulwama massacre signalled a new assertion in Bharat’s defence policy. Intelligence and security agencies saw increased integration and enhanced capabilities.

Between 2014 and 2022, while terrorist activities did not cease entirely, the volume of major attacks on civilian targets considerably dropped. Thousands of militants were neutralized or arrested, and counter-terror networks were disrupted with unprecedented effectiveness, reducing the frequency of devastating attacks on Bharatiya soil.

The Politics of Security Narratives

Despite improved security outcomes, criticism from some political and media quarters—particularly those aligned with left-leaning ideologies—persists. These critics frequently argue that the government’s focus on national security veers into hyper-nationalism, while dismissing its successes as mere theatrics or political posturing.

This selective outrage, some argue, stems not from policy failures but from discomfort with a robust national narrative that the BJP promotes. The opposition and left intellectuals appear more inclined to highlight internal social conflicts or alleged government excesses rather than acknowledge the substantial reduction in terror incidents.

Acknowledging Progress Amidst Imperfection

It is essential to recognize that no administration or security apparatus is flawless. However, refusing to acknowledge Bharat’s progress in counter-terrorism under the BJP government undermines the sacrifices and efforts of countless security personnel who have worked tirelessly to protect the nation.

A strong state response to terrorism does not negate the need for social harmony or civil rights but requires a balanced perspective that appreciates national security’s vital role in safeguarding democracy and freedom.

Rise Above Political Polarization for National Safety

The data clearly indicates a downward trajectory in terror attacks and fatalities post-2014, signifying enhanced deterrence and capability. Political critique is healthy for democracy, but it must be grounded in facts rather than partisan narratives.

Bharat’s citizens deserve security, peace, and honest discourse about the challenges and achievements in combating terrorism. Recognizing progress, demanding accountability, and fostering unity in the face of ongoing threats will determine Bharat’s resilience in securing its future.
