Bharat Ratna for Chaudhary Charan Singh, “Champion of Farmers”

The Government of India in a momentous move on Friday announced the posthumous bestowal of the Bharat Ratna, the nation’s highest civilian honor, upon former Prime Minister Chaudhary Charan Singh.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed the government’s pride in this decision, stating, “It is the good fortune of our government that former Prime Minister of the country Chaudhary Charan Singh is being honored with Bharat Ratna.”

“Be it the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh or the Home Minister of the country and even as an MLA, he always gave impetus to nation-building. He also stood firm against the Emergency. His dedication to our farmer brothers and sisters and his commitment to democracy during the Emergency is inspiring to the entire nation.” said Prime Minister Modi in X post.

Recognized as the “Champion of Farmers,” Chaudhary Charan Singh’s unwavering dedication to advocating for the rights and well-being of farmers has left an indelible mark on India’s socio-political landscape.

Prime Minister Modi highlighted Singh’s lifelong commitment to the agricultural community, describing him as a stalwart who stood firm against challenges such as the Emergency while tirelessly working for the nation’s progress.

Born on December 23, 1902, in Nurpur village, located in the Meerut district of the United Provinces, Chaudhary Charan Singh’s journey from academia to politics exemplifies a steadfast pursuit of public service. Graduating in science in 1923 and later pursuing post-graduation at Agra University, Singh further honed his skills in law and established a legal practice in Ghaziabad before entering politics.

Elected to the UP Legislative Assembly in 1937 from Chhaprauli, Chaudhary Charan Singh played a pivotal role in enacting crucial legislation such as the Debt Redemption Bill of 1939, providing significant relief to rural debtors. His tenure as Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, marked by proactive governance and grassroots empowerment, earned him widespread acclaim.

Beyond his political achievements, Chaudhary Charan Singh’s intellectual legacy endures through his prolific writings, including works such as ‘Abolition of Zamindari’ and ‘India’s Poverty and its Solution,’ which continue to inform discussions on agrarian reform and social justice.

The late Prime Minister will share the honor of the Bharat Ratna with other esteemed recipients, including former Prime Minister PV Narasimha Rao and renowned agricultural scientist MS Swaminathan, reaffirming his enduring impact on India’s socio-economic fabric.
