New Delhi, 9th Feb. In a historic decision, the Indian government unveiled a series of momentous announcements on Friday, bestowing the Bharat Ratna, the nation’s highest civilian award, upon three eminent personalities.
The distinguished recipients include former Prime Minister Chaudhary Charan Singh, former Prime Minister PV Narasimha Rao, and Dr. MS Swaminathan.
Their exceptional contributions across various domains such as agriculture, farmers’ welfare, nation-building, and economic reforms have earned them this prestigious honor, etching their names in India’s annals of history.

Early Life and Education
Born on August 7, 1925, Mankombu Sambasivan Swaminathan devoted his life to eradicating hunger and poverty. Despite initially pursuing a medical career, Swaminathan’s encounter with the Bengal famine of 1942-43 spurred a shift in focus towards agriculture. Enrolling at the Agriculture College in Coimbatore, his aim was to contribute to India’s independence and food security. Swaminathan embarked on his agricultural journey with a focus on genetics and breeding, laying the groundwork for groundbreaking research at the Central Rice Research Institute in Cuttack.
The Green Revolution and Its Impact
Collaborating with Nobel laureate Norman Borlaug, Swaminathan led efforts to introduce high-yielding varieties of rice and wheat. The Green Revolution, characterized by the widespread adoption of modern agricultural techniques, significantly boosted crop yields, revolutionizing India’s food production landscape.
