Kanchipuram, Tamil Nadu: Panchagavya Vidyapeetham has called for Bharat to reclaim its leadership in sustainable livestock practices by highlighting the global importance of humped cattle (Bos indicus), revered in Bharatiya tradition for centuries.

In a statement, Dr. Kumar Rakesh, Pro Vice-Chancellor of Panchagavya Vidyapeetham, said that these indigenous breeds, once nurtured by Bharatiya sages and farmers, are now at the heart of cattle industries across Asia, Africa, the Americas, and Australia. He urged the Government of Bharat and state governments to strengthen research, awareness, and advocacy to position the desi cow as a global symbol of sustainable development.

“From milk and draught power to the agricultural and medicinal value of dung and urine, Bharat has long recognized the unmatched importance of humped cattle. Today, as the world benefits from these breeds, Bharat must take credit and lead the global discourse. This is the right time to align our cultural, rural development, livestock, and foreign policy efforts,” Dr. Rakesh said.

Humped cattle are recognized worldwide for their adaptability, superior heat tolerance, and disease resistance. Originating in the Indus Valley, they have spread across continents. Brazil’s Nellore, derived from Bharat’s Ongole breed, now powers the world’s beef exports, while the Girolando (Gir × Holstein) is the backbone of Brazil’s dairy industry. The American Brahman, created from Bharatiya breeds like Gir and Guzerá, forms the foundation of several crossbreeds. In Africa, Boran and Nguni cattle play vital roles in both economy and culture, while in Australia, Brahman herds dominate the tropical beef sector.

The institution also connected this mission with the national call for Swadeshi. “As appealed by Prime Minister Narendra Bhai Modi ji in his Independence Day address on 15th August, adopting Swadeshi is vital for the prosperity of Bharat without dependence on foreign support. This vision was further echoed on 27th August by RSS Sarsanghchalak Dr. Mohan ji Bhagwat, who underlined the relevance of Swadeshi for our future. Panchagavya Vidyapeetham has already been active in promoting Swadeshi through Panchagavya as part of the mission of Viksit Bharat @ 2047,” Dr. Rakesh added.

Dr. Rakesh credited the vision of Founder Guruji Dr. Niranjan Verma and the leadership of Vice-Chancellor Dr. Kamal Taori, IAS (Retd.), for conceptualizing this initiative. In a tongue-in-cheek remark, he said, “Both Guruji and Dr. Taori jokingly thanked former US President Mr. Donald Trump for apparently supporting Bharat’s Swadeshi mission at lightning speed—though, of course, the real credit belongs entirely to our own efforts for integrated national development.”

As part of its roadmap, Panchagavya Vidyapeetham announced plans to hold meetings in New Delhi with key ministries including Culture, Rural Development, Animal Husbandry, and External Affairs. A major press conference and knowledge-sharing sessions with international experts on indigenous cattle will also be organized in the coming weeks.
