Bengaluru— A disturbing CCTV video of a woman being groped on a Bengaluru street has ignited public outrage, further intensified by Karnataka Home Minister G Parameshwara’s controversial response, suggesting such incidents are inevitable in a large city.
In the viral footage from the BTM Layout area, a man is seen stalking two women in a narrow alley before abruptly groping one of them and fleeing the scene. The terrified women are seen walking away in shock. Despite registering a case under sections related to assault, sexual harassment, and stalking, police have yet to identify the survivor as no formal complaint has been filed.
Reacting to media questions, Home Minister G Parameshwara said, “In a big city like Bengaluru, such incidents will happen. We will take necessary action according to the law.” He added that he has been regularly instructing the city police commissioner to strengthen patrolling.
The minister’s remarks have triggered fierce criticism from the opposition BJP. Spokesperson Prashanth G said, “This is such an insensitive remark. Is he normalising sexual assault and crimes against women? He is shying away from responsibility.”
Former Deputy Chief Minister and BJP MLA C.N. Ashwath Narayan called the minister’s statement “disgusting and demotivating.” He added, “His response shows how helpless he is as Home Minister. People are losing confidence due to such statements.”
