Kolkata, 25th Aug: Veteran Bengali actor and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Joy Banerjee has passed away at the age of 62. He died on Monday at 11:35 a.m. at a private hospital in Kolkata after a prolonged illness.
According to his assistant, Banerjee had been suffering from a respiratory ailment, specifically chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), for the past few years. He was admitted to a hospital on August 15, discharged the next day, but his condition quickly deteriorated. He was put on a ventilator on August 17 before he passed away.
Banerjee was a prominent figure in West Bengal politics from 2014 to 2021. He contested the 2014 Lok Sabha election from Birbhum against Trinamool Congress’s Satabdi Roy and the Uluberia Lok Sabha constituency in 2019, where he lost to Sajda Ahmed. In 2021, he officially announced his departure from active politics and had not been seen in any party activities since then.
Before his political career, Joy Banerjee was a well-known name in the Bengali film industry. He was the main lead in several films, including ‘Hirak Jayanti’, ‘Milan Tithi’, ‘Jiwan Maran’, and ‘Nagmati’. His performance in the film ‘Chopper’ was particularly appreciated by audiences. He was a member of the BJP’s West Bengal State Committee and was the former husband of Trinamool Congress Councillor Ananya Banerjee.
Discussions are ongoing regarding the cremation arrangements. It remains unclear whether his mortal remains will be taken to a BJP office for a final tribute.
