Hyderabad, 6th Jan. The Telangana High Court granted Bandi Sanjay Kumar, the BJP Telangana state president and Karimnagar MP, bail on Wednesday. The 14-day judicial remand was stayed by the High Court, which also issued interim orders granting him bail with immediate effect.
The High Court also ordered his release on a Rs 40,000 personal surety. Desai Prakash Reddy, Bandi Sanjay’s lawyer, stated in a lunch motion that the Court should quash the remand report filed against him. He told the court that false charges were brought against Bandi Sanjay under various sections at the government’s request. The government had filed these cases against Bandi Sanjay with malice in mind.
The Telangana High Court, after hearing Desai’s arguments, stated that it was not appropriate to remand a person under the pretext of violating the COVID rules. The remand until the 17th was deemed insufficient, and the Court inquired as to how a FIR could be filed within 15 minutes of his arrest. The Karimnagar Police were also questioned by the High Court about why Section 333 was included in the FIR. The Telangana government has been served with notices to this effect by the High Court. The date for the next hearing has been set for the 7th of this month.
Bandi Sanjay was arrested on Sunday night as he prepared to hold a ‘Jagarana’ protest, a night vigil, in support of teachers and other government workers who were protesting a state government order. On Sunday night, tensions were high at Kumar’s camp office in Karimnagar, where police claimed there had been no official request for permission to hold the planned protest and that the gathering of party workers was in violation of guidelines issued by the federal and state governments to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
