Guwahati, 20th Jan: The Congress has received a major boost ahead of the upcoming Assam Assembly elections, with an unprecedented rush of ticket aspirants on Monday. Party sources said around 300 applications were submitted in a single day — the highest ever single-day figure in the state’s political history for the Congress.
Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) treasurer Hemahari Pegu said more than 600 aspirants have already filed their applications for party tickets across constituencies, with Tuesday being the last date for submission. The sudden surge indicates growing interest within the party and heightened political activity ahead of the polls.
Among the prominent applicants were former minister Pranati Phukan; sitting MLAs Wazed Ali Choudhury, Pradip Sarkar and Abdul Baten Khandkar; former MLA Rozlina Tirkey; and senior leaders such as Benu Nath, Gopal Sharma, Utpal Gogoi, Deep Bayan, Ajay Gogoi and Manoranjan Buragohain.
Other notable names included Pallavi Saikia, Bidisha Neog, Palakshi Das, Ratul Kalita, Ratul Patowary, Luit Kumar Barman, Kridip Barman, Tanzil Hussain, Mohsin Khan and Jeherul Islam.
Elections to the 126-member Assam Legislative Assembly are expected to be held in the coming months along with polls in Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and West Bengal.
In preparation, senior Congress leaders held a high-level strategy meeting last week at party president Mallikarjun Kharge’s residence in New Delhi. Former Congress chief Rahul Gandhi attended the meeting, along with senior observers Bhupesh Baghel and DK Shivakumar, AICC general secretary (Organisation) KC Venugopal, Assam Congress president Gaurav Gogoi and AICC in-charge Jitendra Singh.
The Congress is aiming to regain power in Assam after two consecutive terms of BJP rule in the state.
