Assam Police Directed Not to Fire Upon Civilians: CM Biswa

Guwahati, 1st Dec. Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Wednesday that police should not shoot at civilians, whether they are from Meghalaya or Assam.

“Police should not use their weapons against civilians. I always instruct Assam police not to fire upon civilians,” CM Himanta Biswa Sarma said.

On November 22, six people were killed in a shooting incident near the Assam-Meghalaya border, five of whom were from Meghalaya and one from Assam.

Concerning the Assam-Meghalaya border dispute, the Assam Chief Minister stated that the two states share a constitutional boundary.

“Both states should have to follow the constitutional boundary and we are following it. Based on the history, Meghalaya wanted a discussion on Block A and Block B of the inter-state boundary and both governments have constituted regional Committees for discussion. I am hopeful that, the issue will be resolved through dialogue,” CM Biswa Sarma said.

Earlier, the Assam Chief Minister ceremonially distributed scooters to meritorious girl and boy students from Kamrup (Metro) and Kamrup districts who received 60% and above and 75% and above marks in the Higher Secondary (Class 12) examination this year.

During a ceremony at the Veterinary College playground in Khanapara, Guwahati, the Assam Chief Minister distributed scooters to deserving students as part of the Dr Banikanta Kakati Merit Award.

The award was given to 6,052 boys and 29,748 girls across Assam.
