Guwahati, 17th Sept: Opposition parties in Assam have announced plans to file a police complaint against the BJP following the circulation of an artificial intelligence-generated video on social media, which has drawn sharp criticism for its portrayal of the state.
The video, posted on the official Assam BJP X handle (@BJP4Assam), suggested a “Muslim takeover” in the state. Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi condemned it, accusing the BJP of pushing narratives aimed at creating a “Muslim-free India.”
Assam Congress chief Gaurav Gogoi, also deputy leader of the opposition in the Lok Sabha, described the video as a misrepresentation of Assamese society. “The words, actions and images produced by the BJP IT cell do not even have the strength to scratch the surface of Assamese society,” he said on X. Gogoi added that Assam’s rich heritage, nurtured by figures like Mahapurush Srimanta Sankardeva and Lachit Borphukan, cannot be undermined by divisive politics. The Congress is set to lodge a formal complaint in Guwahati.
The All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) also criticised the BJP video. Aminul Islam, MLA and AIUDF general secretary, said, “They want to give the impression that if the BJP is not in power there will be a total Muslim takeover… This video is a form of hate speech. We plan to approach the Election Commission.”
Assam BJP spokesperson Rupam Goswami defended the video, claiming it reflects concerns about demographic changes threatening the livelihoods, land, and culture of indigenous communities.
The controversy emerges ahead of the 2026 Assam Assembly elections, with political parties intensifying scrutiny of the BJP’s messaging and narratives on social media.
