GG News Bureau
Guwahati, 27th Aug:
Assam has been jolted by a major controversy after an FIR was filed against Padma Shri awardee Sayeda Hamid, accusing her of making explosively communal and anti-national remarks during a public meeting in Guwahati.

The complaint, filed by Rupa Rani Bhuyan, aProfessor at  Mangaldai College, describes Hamid’s statements as “highly inflammatory, dangerous and capable of sparking communal violence”. Bhuyan, who is non-political and works for Hindutva causes, says she could not remain silent after hearing Hamid’s “provocative and divisive” words.

Who filed the FIR?
Rupa Rani Bhuyan, Professor at  Mangaldai College, Assam. She is a social activist ,working for Hindutva causes,

Against whom?
Padma Shri awardee and social activist Sayeda Hamid.

What are the allegations?

  • Gave a communal twist to Assam’s eviction drives.
  • Allegedly supported illegal Bangladeshi Muslims staying in Assam.
  • Criticised CM Himanta Biswa Sarma and the state government.
  • Made “inflammatory remarks” that could spark communal unrest.

Why it matters?
Assam has long struggled with the sensitive issue of illegal immigration and encroachment. Any communal spin can destabilize peace and trigger political storms.

The flashpoint came on August 22, when Hamid reportedly told a citizens’ gathering that Assam’s eviction drives were unfairly targeting Muslims. She dismissed the ecological concerns of forest destruction and waterbody encroachment, instead claiming the eviction process was a direct attack on one community.

But what truly set off alarm bells, Bhuyan claims, was Hamid’s open support for illegal Bangladeshi Muslims. According to the FIR, Hamid demanded they be accommodated in Assam — remarks Bhuyan has branded a “direct assault on the sovereignty of India”.

The Padma Shri awardee didn’t stop there. She allegedly lashed out at the Assam Government and Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, accusing them of communalising governance. These statements, Bhuyan insists, were nothing short of an attempt to demean the state’s leadership and destabilise Assam.

“Sayeda Hamid has painted a legal eviction of illegal encroachers with Islamic communal colour. She has insulted our government, supported foreigners and tried to incite hatred. This is an anti-national agenda, and the law must act,” Bhuyan thundered in her FIR.

Assam on Edge

The complaint has electrified Assam’s political landscape. BJP insiders are already signalling that the FIR validates their warnings about ‘dangerous appeasement politics’, while opposition parties face growing pressure to clarify their stance on Hamid’s remarks.

For ordinary citizens, the worry is real. Assam has lived through decades of ethnic and communal strife, and Bhuyan’s warning that Hamid’s words could “ignite violence” has struck a raw nerve. Many fear that even a single careless statement from a high-profile figure can unravel the state’s hard-earned peace.

Though the Assam Police has not yet made a public statement, sources confirm the FIR is being reviewed at senior levels. The case is now expected to become a political flashpoint, pitting a decorated Padma Shri awardee against a citizen determined to defend what she calls Assam’s dignity and identity.

This explosive FIR is no longer just a police complaint. It has become a political grenade — one that threatens to shake Assam’s fragile equilibrium and spark a heated national debate on free speech, communalism, and national security.
