Itanagar, 5th Oct: Arunachal Pradesh is set to script history with the launch of its first-ever commercial coal mine at the Namchik-Namphuk coal block on October 6, 2025. The initiative marks a turning point in the state’s energy and economic journey, as Union Minister for Coal and Mines, G. Kishan Reddy, will perform the Bhoomi Poojan, hand over the mining lease, flag off tools and machinery, and take part in a 100-tree plantation drive.
Reserves and Economic Boost
With reserves of 1.5 crore tonnes, the Namchik-Namphuk coal block is expected to generate over ₹100 crore annually in state revenue and create jobs for local youth. Initially allocated in 2003 but stalled for years, the block was revived through a transparent auction in 2022, opening new opportunities for private sector participation.
Alignment with PM Modi’s Vision
The initiative advances Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s EAST vision—Empower, Act, Strengthen, Transform—for the Northeast. With India crossing 1 billion tonnes of coal production last year, Arunachal Pradesh now joins the country’s energy security roadmap.
Ending Illegal Mining, Unlocking Resources
The launch will put an end to years of illegal mining and resource wastage, ensuring accountability and fair distribution of benefits. Alongside coal, the government is unlocking critical minerals, with two blocks in Arunachal and five in Assam under auction—key for technology and national security.
Sustainable and Community-Centric Mining
The government stressed that mining in the Northeast will proceed without compromising ecology. Under Mission Green Coal Regions, 57,000 hectares of land have been reclaimed, with a further 16,000 hectares to be restored by 2030. The model emphasizes Jan Bhagidari, making mining both an ecological and community responsibility.
Transforming the Northeast
Over the past decade, the Northeast has seen ₹6 lakh crore in investments, with Arunachal’s allocations rising from ₹6,000 crore pre-2014 to ₹1 lakh crore post-2014. Major connectivity milestones include the Sela Tunnel, Bhupen Hazarika Bridge, 19 airports, 16,000 km of highways, and a five-fold boost in rail investments. The Northeast Gas Grid and Vibrant Villages Programme are further driving growth.
Worker Welfare at the Core
Recognising workers as the strength of the coal sector, the government has rolled out welfare measures such as ₹1–2 crore accident cover, insurance for contract workers, scholarships, healthcare, and a uniform dress code for dignity and unity.
A New Era for Arunachal and India’s Energy Future
The Namchik-Namphuk launch represents the fusion of development, ecology, and Jan Bhagidari, advancing Atmanirbhar Bharat while ensuring community welfare. Under PM Modi’s leadership, the coal and mining sector aims to make the Northeast a global model of sustainable growth and empowerment.
