Kolkata, 6th Jan. Another TMC leader in West Bengal was on Saturday arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in connection with an alleged ration scam.
Shankar Adhya, the former chairman of Bongaon Municipality, was taken into custody after searches were conducted at his residence and properties linked to him and his family members. The searches lasted for 17 hours.
Adhya’s supporters attempted to stop the investigators from taking him away and even threw stones at their vehicles. The situation was brought under control by CRPF personnel who accompanied the ED team.
Adhya was arrested due to unsatisfactory responses during questioning.
This incident marks the second attack on the agency, following the one in Sandeshkhali.
Adhya is believed to be close to state minister Jyotipriyo Mallick, who was arrested last year in connection with the same scam.
The ED also conducted searches at the residences of Adhya’s in-laws, his associates, and an ice cream factory associated with them. In addition to seizing documents, the ED found around Rs 8 lakh in cash at the in-laws’ residence.
Adhya has stated that he will cooperate with the ED. He has been taken to the ED office in Salt Lake and will be presented in a Kolkata court later in the day.
