New Delhi, 11th Feb: Union Minister of Women and Child Development Annpurna Devi on Wednesday paid tribute to women scientists across India on the occasion of International Day of Women and Girls in Science, calling for concerted efforts to eliminate gender biases in STEM fields.

In a post on social media platform X, the Minister said, “Today is the International Day of Women & Girls in Science. Let’s celebrate the pioneering contributions of women scientists of the nation and pledge to remove biases & barriers.”

The statement, posted on February 11, comes as the world observes the UN-designated International Day of Women and Girls in Science, which aims to promote full and equal participation of women in scientific fields.

Annpurna Devi’s message acknowledges the significant contributions made by Indian women scientists while highlighting the persistent challenges they face in accessing opportunities and advancing in their careers.

Despite notable achievements by women scientists in India across disciplines ranging from space exploration to biotechnology, gender disparity remains a concern in STEM sectors. Women continue to be underrepresented in senior scientific positions and face obstacles including limited funding access and workplace discrimination.

The Minister’s call for removing biases and barriers aligns with ongoing government initiatives to promote gender equality and create an enabling environment for women in science and technology.

The International Day of Women and Girls in Science has been observed annually on February 11 since its adoption by the United Nations General Assembly, serving as a global reminder of the critical role women play in advancing scientific knowledge and innovation.
