Patna, 2nd Nov: Janata Dal (United) strongman and former Mokama MLA Anant Kumar Singh, popularly known as Chhote Sarkar, has once again drawn national attention following his arrest in connection with the murder of gangster-turned-politician Dular Singh Yadav. The case has reignited debate over the deep-rooted criminalisation in Bihar’s politics.
A towering figure in Mokama’s political landscape, Singh is as famous for his trademark white attire and sunglasses as for his criminal record. His social media reels and flamboyant remarks have earned him a cult following. Yet, beneath the larger-than-life persona lies a history marked by 28 ongoing criminal cases, including charges of murder, conspiracy, assault, kidnapping, and arms possession.
According to his election affidavit, Singh owns movable and immovable assets worth over ₹37.88 crore, including luxury vehicles like a Toyota Land Cruiser and Fortuner. His wife, Neelam Devi—currently an RJD MLA—declared assets worth ₹62.72 crore. Singh also owns livestock, including an elephant and a horse.
The veteran Bhumihar leader has represented Mokama for two decades, switching political loyalties between JDU, RJD, and contesting independently—yet consistently winning. He first entered the Assembly in 2005, retained the seat in 2010, and later won as an Independent in 2015. In 2020, he won again as an RJD candidate but lost his Assembly membership in 2022 following conviction in an arms case.
Dular Yadav’s death on Thursday in Mokama has added a new chapter to this saga. Police reports state Yadav died of cardiorespiratory failure caused by injuries to his heart and lungs inflicted by a blunt object. Singh and two associates—Manikant Thakur and Ranjeet Ram—have been arrested.
While the post-mortem confirmed Yadav’s violent death, Singh maintains that he was not at the crime scene and has accused rival leader Suraj Bhan of orchestrating the killing to tarnish his image. “It must be the handiwork of Suraj Bhan. He wanted me to get a bad name,” Singh claimed.
