Guwahati, 30th March: Union Home Minister Amit Shah has expressed confidence that the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) will secure more than 90 seats in the upcoming Assam Assembly elections.
Speaking at the start of his two-day visit to the poll-bound Assam, Shah said the people of the state are eager to bring the NDA back to power for a third consecutive term.
“The people of Assam are excited… we will win over 90 seats,” he said, as he kicked off his campaign with a large roadshow in Guwahati.
The roadshow began from Arya Vidyapeeth College field and passed through key parts of the city before concluding near Nepali Mandir, drawing significant crowds. Shah also attended a party meeting at the BJP’s state headquarters, Atal Bihari Vajpayee Bhawan.
According to party sources, he is scheduled to address multiple election rallies, including Vijay Sankalp Samaroh events in Dhekiajuli and Tihu, and hold meetings with senior party leaders during his visit.
Highlighting the NDA government’s record, Shah credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for driving development in the state.
He said Assam has witnessed improvements in infrastructure, healthcare and education, and claimed that incidents of extremism and violence have significantly declined.
With the Election Commission announcing April 9 as the polling date, political parties have intensified their campaigns across the state.
In the outgoing Assembly, the BJP holds 64 seats, supported by allies including the Asom Gana Parishad and the United People’s Party Liberal. The opposition comprises parties such as the Congress and AIUDF.
The election will be the first in Assam after the 2023 delimitation exercise, adding further significance to the contest.
Counting of votes is scheduled for May 4.
