New Delhi, 11th March: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Wednesday sharply slammed the Opposition for bringing a notice seeking the removal of Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, accusing them of disrupting parliamentary proceedings and making misleading claims about the functioning of the House.

Speaking during the debate on the motion, Shah rejected the allegation that the Leader of the Opposition (LoP) was not allowed to speak in the Lok Sabha.

He asserted that the Lower House functions strictly according to established parliamentary rules and every member is expected to adhere to them.

“The Lok Sabha functions according to established rules and regulations. Every member must follow them. If someone deliberately violates these norms, there is nothing wrong in the Chair rebuking that member,” Shah said.

Taking a swipe at the Opposition, the Home Minister said senior leaders within the Congress should advise their colleagues on maintaining parliamentary decorum.

He remarked that some members repeatedly claim their microphones are switched off and that they are not allowed to speak, without understanding the rules governing the House.

“Even ministers’ microphones are switched off if they speak out of turn,” Shah pointed out.

Shah also accused the Congress-led Opposition of creating unnecessary pandemonium in Parliament and attempting to claim moral superiority despite what he described as contradictory behaviour.

Highlighting parliamentary precedents, Shah noted that in earlier no-confidence motions against Speakers during Congress-led governments, the Speaker had continued to preside over proceedings.

However, he said Om Birla chose to recuse himself from the debate, setting a new example in parliamentary conduct.

The Home Minister further criticised the Opposition for what he described as procedural lapses in the motion seeking Birla’s removal.

“In the first notice, they made mistakes by mentioning incorrect dates and figures. In the second notice, only one member signed while the signatures of the remaining 108 members were photocopies,” Shah said.

He added that the Speaker himself had called the Opposition members and asked them to rectify the errors in their notice.

Shah also alleged that despite moving the no-confidence motion, Opposition members did not show seriousness about discussing it in the House.

According to him, the Business Advisory Committee had scheduled the debate on March 9, but Opposition members themselves refrained from participating in the discussion.

The motion against the Speaker has been brought by Opposition parties accusing him of partisan conduct during Lok Sabha proceedings. However, the ruling side maintains that the House continues to function according to established parliamentary norms and procedures.
