Modasa, 18th Nov: Four people, including a newborn baby, his father, a doctor and a nurse, died after an ambulance caught fire near Modasa in Gujarat’s Arvalli district early Tuesday, police said. The incident took place around 1 am on the Modasa–Dhansura road when the one-day-old infant was being shifted from a hospital in Modasa to a private hospital in Ahmedabad for advanced treatment.
Police inspector DB Vala said the blaze erupted suddenly in the vehicle, trapping those seated in the rear cabin. The victims were identified as the infant, his father Jignesh Mochi (38), Dr. Shantilal Rentia (30) of Ahmedabad and nurse Bhuriben Manat (23) from Arvalli district.
CCTV footage shows the ambulance slowing down near a petrol pump after the driver noticed flames at the rear. While the driver, Ankit Thakor, and two of Mochi’s relatives seated in front managed to escape with injuries, the four in the back could not be rescued.
Fire brigade teams reached the spot but were unable to save the victims as the vehicle was engulfed in flames.
District Superintendent of Police Manoharsinh Jadeja said forensic experts have been called to determine the cause of the fire. The injured have been admitted to a nearby hospital, and further investigation is underway.
