Guwahati, 24th March: Badruddin Ajmal on Monday filed his nomination from the newly created Binnakandi Assembly constituency, marking his return to state-level electoral politics after nearly two decades.

The All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) chief used the occasion to launch a sharp political attack on the Indian National Congress, accusing it of “destroying minorities socially, economically and politically.”

Addressing a large gathering after filing his nomination, Ajmal alleged that Congress was responsible for the exclusion of Muslims from the National Register of Citizens (NRC) and the establishment of detention centres. “They removed our names from the NRC and labelled us foreigners,” he said.

Ajmal further accused the party of neglecting key issues such as land erosion, displacement, and education in Assam, claiming minorities were deprived of opportunities for decades. “If BJP defeated us communally, Congress destroyed us socially and economically,” he remarked.

Referring to his defeat in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections from Dhubri, Ajmal said the outcome reflected a “lack of education” among voters, adding that he was not disappointed by the loss but concerned about awareness levels.

The AIUDF leader also highlighted his tenure as a Member of Parliament, citing development projects such as improved connectivity, infrastructure initiatives, and educational institutions in Dhubri.

Taking aim at Congress leadership in the state, Ajmal alleged that the party had lost public trust and accused it of using its political machinery to defeat him in the previous elections.

With his entry into the fray, the Binnakandi constituency is expected to witness a high-profile contest, as Ajmal positions himself as a key voice on issues like NRC, erosion, and minority rights in Assam.
