Mumbai, 17th Feb. Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar has raised the election stakes by announcing his intention to contest against Baramati MP Supriya Sule in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. Traditionally a stronghold of Sharad Pawar and his daughter Supriya Sule, the Baramati Lok Sabha constituency now faces the prospect of a familial electoral showdown.
Ajit Pawar declared his plan to field a candidate against Supriya Sule, emphasizing that his entry into the electoral fray for the Assembly elections in Baramati would only be contingent upon his candidate’s victory against his cousin. He urged voters to prioritize the development of the constituency, vowing to nominate a candidate with no prior electoral experience but backed by seasoned supporters.
Asserting his family’s electoral legacy, Ajit Pawar expressed pride in maintaining a record of opposition candidates forfeiting their deposits in Baramati since the inception of Maharashtra statehood.
In a veiled attack aimed at Supriya Sule, Ajit Pawar insinuated that those engaged in constructive work often face unwarranted allegations, contrasting them with those who evade responsibilities to maintain a clean image.
Support for Ajit Pawar’s faction as the legitimate NCP received validation from Maharashtra Assembly Speaker Rahul Narvekar, who deemed the decision justifiable and constitutional. However, criticism from the UBT faction of the Shiv Sena likened the proceedings to a “comedy show.”
The Election Commission’s decision to allocate the party name and symbol to the Ajit Pawar-led faction further solidified their position. Speaker Narwekar dismissed calls to disqualify MLAs following a party split in June 2023, affirming Ajit Pawar’s faction as the genuine NCP.
With the political landscape in Maharashtra undergoing shifts, the upcoming electoral contests in Baramati promise to be closely watched affairs, shaping the future trajectory of the state’s political dynamics.
