Guwahati, 28th August. The All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) has called for a 10 percent reservation for Muslims in Assam, citing economic and social backwardness within the community. AIUDF MLA Aminul Islam made the demand on Tuesday, arguing that Muslims in the state are economically disadvantaged and require greater support through government jobs and schemes.
AIUDF’s Demand:
Reservation Demand: Aminul Islam stated, “Muslims in Assam are backward and economically weaker. We have demanded 10 percent reservation for them in government jobs and other schemes.”
Population Discrepancy: Islam contested the figures provided by Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma regarding the Muslim population in the state. He claimed that the actual Muslim population has been higher than the official figures, citing discrepancies in district formations and census data.
Criticism of Government Response: The AIUDF MLA criticized the state government for its handling of recent rape cases, specifically the Dhing gang rape incident. He alleged that Chief Minister Sarma has only highlighted cases where the accused are Muslims, ignoring other rape incidents. Islam accused the BJP-led government of attempting to cover up the facts surrounding the Dhing case, where one accused was reportedly killed.
Recent Incident: On August 22, a minor girl was allegedly gang-raped in Nagaon district, leading to the arrest of two suspects. The girl was found in a semi-conscious state by the roadside and was admitted to a hospital. Swapnaneel Deka, Superintendent of Police of Nagaon district, confirmed that two individuals have been taken into custody for interrogation.
National Context: The demand for reservation and criticism of the state government comes amid nationwide outrage over the murder and alleged sexual assault of a female trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata on August 9.
