New Delhi, 22nd March: The government has lifted the temporary cap on domestic airfares, allowing airlines to freely set ticket prices from Monday as the aviation sector moves towards normal market operations.

The decision by the Ministry of Civil Aviation ends the fare ceiling imposed in December 2025 following widespread disruptions and price spikes in the sector.

With the cap removed, airlines will no longer be restricted by the earlier upper limit of around ₹18,000 for one-way economy tickets and can now determine fares based on demand, route and market conditions.

However, the government has cautioned airlines against “excessive or unjustified” fare hikes during peak demand or disruptions, warning that regulatory intervention could be reintroduced if required in public interest.

The fare cap had been introduced as an emergency measure after mass flight cancellations, particularly by IndiGo, led to reduced capacity and sharp increases in ticket prices.

The latest move comes amid rising aviation turbine fuel (ATF) prices and geopolitical tensions, both of which have increased operational costs for airlines.

Officials said the decision aims to restore market dynamics and provide pricing flexibility to carriers as the sector stabilises.

Airlines had been pushing for deregulation, with industry bodies citing financial strain due to fare restrictions and rising expenses.

The removal of the cap is expected to bring greater pricing freedom to airlines, though passengers may see fluctuations in ticket prices depending on demand and operational conditions.
