Ahmedabad, 20thAugust – Tension gripped Ahmedabad on Tuesday after a shocking incident inside a private school, where a Class 10 student was fatally stabbed by a junior from Class 9. The victim, a 15-year-old boy belonging to the Sindhi community, succumbed to his injuries, sparking widespread protests, vandalism, and heavy police deployment around the school premises.
The Incident
According to police, the incident occurred during school hours when a heated argument between the two students escalated. The accused, a ninth-grade student reportedly from the Muslim community, pulled out a sharp object and stabbed the victim multiple times. The boy collapsed inside the school and was rushed to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared him brought dead.
Investigators are still probing the immediate cause of the confrontation. Initial reports suggest the accused may have carried a knife into the school, raising serious questions about security lapses. Authorities are also verifying whether previous quarrels or bullying played a role in the fatal assault.
Shock and Outrage
The news spread rapidly across the city, triggering an outpouring of grief and anger. Members of the Sindhi community, joined by activists of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), gathered outside the school demanding strict action against the accused and accountability from school authorities.
Protesters alleged that negligence on the part of the management enabled the crime to occur within the supposedly safe environment of a classroom. The anger soon turned violent as sections of the crowd vandalised school property, smashing windows, tearing down noticeboards, and raising slogans against the administration.
Police Response
Ahmedabad police swung into action, detaining several agitators involved in vandalism. Senior officers confirmed that the accused minor has been taken into custody and a case of murder has been registered. Given that the accused is under 18, the Juvenile Justice Act will apply, though investigators hinted at recommending trial as an adult considering the brutality of the crime.
To prevent further escalation, additional security forces were deployed around the school and nearby areas. Police appealed to community leaders to maintain calm and assured strict legal action.
Community Reactions
Leaders of the Sindhi community expressed deep shock, demanding that the state government ensure swift justice. “Our children are not safe even in schools. This is not just murder; it is a complete collapse of security and discipline in educational institutions,” one community spokesperson said.
ABVP activists staged demonstrations across parts of the city, accusing the school of indifference and pressing for stronger security protocols such as CCTV monitoring, random bag checks, and stricter disciplinary measures.
Larger Concerns
The incident has reignited debates over juvenile crime, communal sensitivities, and safety standards in schools. Child psychologists stressed that increasing aggression among students, coupled with easy access to sharp weapons, can have dangerous consequences. Education experts urged schools to strengthen counseling mechanisms and conflict resolution systems to prevent such tragedies.
As investigations continue, the bereaved family and community await justice. The state education department has ordered an inquiry into the incident and sought a report from the school within 48 hours.
For now, Ahmedabad mourns the loss of a young life cut short by peer violence—an incident that has left parents, teachers, and policymakers grappling with urgent questions about safety inside India’s schools.
