Patna, 10th Nov: The Adani Group is investing about ₹30,000 crore in Bihar through the under-construction Bhagalpur (Pirpainti) Power Project, a move expected to transform the state’s power supply, strengthen its industrial base, and create large-scale employment opportunities.
The project marks the first major private investment in Bihar in decades, offering a much-needed push to a state that has long remained on the margins of India’s industrial progress. After the bifurcation of Jharkhand, Bihar lost most of its industrial hubs, leaving its economy heavily dependent on agriculture.
Currently, Bihar’s per capita GDP stands at around $776, and per capita electricity consumption is only 317 kWh—among the lowest in the country. In contrast, industrially advanced states like Gujarat consume 1,980 kWh per capita and have a GDP of $3,917 per person. The lack of industrial growth has led to large-scale migration, with around 3.4 crore workers seeking employment outside the state.
The Bhagalpur Power Project, being developed under the Bihar Industrial Investment Promotion Policy 2025, is a crucial step toward bridging this gap. The project has faced controversy over land issues; however, official sources clarified that the land was acquired over a decade ago and leased to the company at a nominal rate, with ownership remaining with the Bihar government. Once the project’s term ends, the land will automatically revert to the state.
With electricity demand rising rapidly, Bihar’s installed power capacity of 6,000 MW falls short of its FY25 peak demand of 8,908 MW, forcing it to import energy from the national grid. The Central Electricity Authority (CEA) projects that demand could double to 17,097 MW by FY35.
The Bhagalpur project is therefore viewed as vital for meeting Bihar’s growing power needs, narrowing the energy gap, and laying the foundation for sustained industrial and economic development.
