Mumbai, 10th Feb: Bollywood actor Ranveer Singh has received a threatening WhatsApp voice note demanding crores of rupees in ransom, police said, prompting heightened security outside his residence.
Mumbai Police have stepped up security arrangements at the 40-year-old actor’s home and launched an investigation to trace the sender of the threat. The development comes days after a firing incident at the residence of filmmaker Rohit Shetty in the city.
According to police, at least five rounds were fired at the first floor of Shetty’s nine-storey building in the Juhu area around 12.45 am on February 1. One of the bullets hit the glass of a gym inside the premises.
Police have arrested five people in connection with the firing and claimed that the accused were acting on the instructions of Shubham Lonkar, an absconding member of the Lawrence Bishnoi gang. Lonkar is also wanted in cases related to the murder of NCP leader Baba Siddique and the firing outside actor Salman Khan’s residence in Bandra.
The Bishnoi gang has previously claimed responsibility for multiple attacks on actor-comedian Kapil Sharma’s café in Canada and has issued threats to Salman Khan in the past. In one such incident, a threat note was reportedly left at Bandra Bandstand, where Khan’s father, veteran screenwriter Salim Khan, goes for his daily walk.
Police said investigations are ongoing to identify the source of the threat to Ranveer Singh and determine any links with recent incidents involving film personalities.
