Thiruvananthapuram, 1st Dec: Activist Rahul Easwar was arrested on Sunday for allegedly defaming the complainant in the sexual assault case involving suspended Congress MLA Rahul Mamkoottathil, police said.

The Thiruvananthapuram Cyber Police initiated a probe after the woman lodged a complaint stating that she was being targeted in a coordinated cyber campaign, with defamatory remarks and her photographs being circulated online.

According to officials, a case was registered based on her complaint, and a notice was issued to Easwar directing him to appear for interrogation. Around 5 pm, officers reached his residence and served the notice, asking him to report immediately.

Easwar arrived at the Armed Reserve Police Camp along with his wife and an accompanying policeman. Investigators examined his electronic devices, including his mobile phone and laptop, as part of the inquiry. After more than three hours of questioning, police formally recorded his arrest. He will be produced before the court on Monday.

Police officials said Easwar’s social media accounts are being scrutinized to verify posts allegedly defaming the woman. Since the allegations against Mamkoottathil emerged, Easwar has publicly supported the suspended MLA and claimed he is innocent.
