Kolkata, 4th Aug: In a major leadership reshuffle, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) has appointed its National General Secretary, Abhishek Banerjee, as the party’s leader in the Lok Sabha. The three-time MP from Diamond Harbour will replace veteran lawmaker Sudip Bandopadhyay, who was reportedly relieved of his duties due to a long-standing health issue.

The decision was finalized on Monday during a virtual meeting of TMC MPs, which was chaired by party supremo and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. The move is widely seen as solidifying Abhishek Banerjee’s position as the party’s second-in-command ahead of the 2026 West Bengal Assembly Elections.

Party sources indicated that Sudip Bandopadhyay, who has been ailing for some time and has not been attending Parliament regularly, was replaced to ensure more effective coordination of the party’s 29 members in the lower house. While there was no immediate comment from Mr. Bandopadhyay, the TMC also saw another leadership change, with MP Kalyan Banerjee reportedly resigning as the party’s chief whip.
