Kolkata, 12th Feb. Former President Pranab Mukherjee’s son, Abhijit Mukherjee, rejoined the Congress on Wednesday, admitting that his decision to join the Trinamool Congress (TMC) in 2021 was a “mistake.”

Mukherjee, a two-time Congress MP and former legislator from West Bengal, had contested the 2019 Lok Sabha elections on a Congress ticket from Jangipur but lost. He later joined TMC in July 2021 but remained politically inactive. The ruling party denied him a nomination in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

Expressing his desire to return, Mukherjee had recently approached Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge. Speaking after officially rejoining the party in Kolkata, he said, “Leaving Congress and joining TMC was a mistake. I apologise for it. I am grateful to Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, and Priyanka Gandhi for giving me a second chance.”

Mukherjee also asserted that Congress is the only viable alternative to “divisive politics” in the country. “Without Congress, uniting the nation is impossible,” he said, vowing to work under the party’s leadership.
