New Delhi, 8th Feb. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the BJP are locked in a close contest as counting for the Delhi Assembly elections began this morning. While AAP has expressed confidence in retaining power, early trends suggest a tough fight, with its key leaders, including Arvind Kejriwal, Manish Sisodia, and Chief Minister Atishi, trailing from their respective constituencies.
Kejriwal, contesting from the New Delhi seat, is trailing BJP’s Parvesh Verma, while Sisodia is behind in Jangpura. Atishi is also trailing against BJP’s Ramesh Bidhuri in Kalkaji.
However, some AAP leaders, including Delhi Health Minister Saurabh Bharadwaj from Greater Kailash and Gopal Rai from Babarpur, are leading in their constituencies. Senior leader Durgesh Pathak is ahead in Rajinder Nagar.
Meanwhile, AAP’s Amanatullah Khan (Okhla), former minister Satyendar Jain (Shakur Basti), and Avadh Ojha (Patparganj) are among those trailing.
Delhi voted on February 5 for its 70-member assembly. AAP has campaigned aggressively, touting its ‘Delhi model’ of governance to counter the BJP’s corruption allegations. Atishi, confident of AAP’s victory, termed the election a “battle between good and evil,” while Saurabh Bharadwaj predicted a win with at least 40-45 seats.
The final results will determine whether AAP secures a fourth consecutive term or if BJP stages a comeback in the national capital.
