Chandigarh, 21st March: Punjab Transport Minister Laljit Singh Bhullar on Saturday resigned from the Cabinet led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann amid controversy surrounding the alleged suicide of a government official in Amritsar.
Confirming the development, Chief Minister Mann said he had asked Bhullar to step down to ensure a fair and impartial investigation into the case.
The controversy erupted after a video surfaced on social media in which warehouse corporation district manager Gagandeep Singh Randhawa was allegedly heard stating that he had consumed a poisonous substance and naming the minister.
Opposition leader Bikram Singh Majithia claimed that Randhawa died by suicide after consuming Celphos and alleged that he was under pressure to accept a bribe of ₹10 lakh and award a tender to a person linked to the minister.
Majithia further alleged that the official was called to the minister’s residence, assaulted, and attempts were made to record a video.
Bhullar, however, strongly denied the allegations, calling them “absolutely baseless and false.”
In a statement, he said he had requested the Chief Minister to accept his resignation until the probe is completed, reiterating that he supports a thorough investigation.
The resignation comes as political tensions escalate in Punjab, with the opposition demanding accountability and the government stressing its commitment to a transparent inquiry.
