Ludhiana, 11th Jan. Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader and Ludhiana West MLA Gurpreet Bassi Gogi passed away on Friday night due to a gunshot wound in what police suspect to be a case of “accidental fire” from his licensed pistol.
The incident occurred around 11:30 PM at Gogi’s residence in Ludhiana. Joint Commissioner of Police Jaskaran Singh Teja said, “The bullet, fired from his licensed pistol, pierced his temple. Family members stated it was an accidental fire.” Gogi was rushed to Dayanand Medical College and Hospital (DMCH), where doctors declared him dead.
The body has been placed at the DMCH mortuary, and a post-mortem will be conducted to ascertain further details. Police have initiated an investigation into the circumstances of the incident.
Punjab AAP President Aman Arora expressed his condolences, saying, “My deepest condolences to the grieving family during this difficult time. May his noble soul rest in eternal peace.” Several political leaders visited Gogi’s residence to offer their sympathies.
Hours before the tragedy, Gogi had met Vidhan Sabha Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan and AAP MP Balbir Singh Seechewal to discuss cleaning Ludhiana’s ‘Budha Nalla’.
Gogi joined AAP in 2022 after leaving Congress and achieved a significant victory over two-time MLA Bharat Bhushan Ashu in the Ludhiana West constituency during the Punjab Assembly elections. Recently, his wife, Sukhchain Kaur Gogi, contested municipal corporation elections but was unsuccessful.
