New Delhi, 15th Sept: The Ministry of Railways has announced that beginning 1 October 2025, Aadhaar authentication will be mandatory for booking general reserved tickets online through the IRCTC website and mobile app during the first 15 minutes of the opening of general reservation.

According to a statement issued by the Press Information Bureau, the measure is intended to ensure that the benefits of the railway reservation system reach genuine passengers and to prevent exploitation by touts and other unscrupulous elements who often block seats immediately after bookings open.

The ministry clarified that there will be no change in the booking timings at computerized Passenger Reservation System (PRS) counters across Indian Railways. Passengers preferring to book tickets at physical counters can continue to do so without Aadhaar verification.

Further, the existing 10-minute restriction for authorized ticketing agents—which bars them from booking opening-day reserved tickets during the initial window—will remain in force.

Officials said the step is part of Indian Railways’ broader push to enhance transparency, improve user convenience, and provide a level playing field for ordinary travelers seeking confirmed tickets.
