New Delhi, 21th Jan. According to a statement from the United States Central Command (CENTCOM), insurgents backed by Iran launched several ballistic missiles and rockets on Saturday, with the goal of hitting the Al Asad air base in Western Iraq.
According to the statement, some of the missiles struck the base, but the majority were intercepted by the air defence systems of the base.
According to a CENTCOM statement, damage assessments are on-going, many US servicemen are being evaluated for traumatic brain injuries, and at least one Iraqi service member was hurt.
Speaking on condition of anonymity, a US official stated on Saturday that an attack on Iraq’s Ain Al Asad air base on Saturday resulted in minor injuries for US servicemen and wounds for a member of the security forces.
In a statement, the US military’s Central Command said that several ballistic missiles and rockets fired from inside Iraq by insurgents backed by Iran had struck the base. The statement added that personnel were being assessed for traumatic brain injury, but it did not confirm the degree of any injuries sustained by US citizens.
The original reports from Iraqi security agencies and an Iraqi government source had simply mentioned rocket fire against the base; the US military’s assessment was harsher. Central Command revealed that while some missiles struck the base, the majority of them were intercepted, providing an idea of the attack’s scope.
Central Command stated, “Damage assessments are ongoing,” and added that the incident happened in Iraq around 1830 (1530 GMT).
The US military has been attacked by militants backed by Iran at least 58 times in Iraq and another 83 times in Syria since the start of the Israel-Hamas conflict in October. These attacks often involve a combination of missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles.
