Kolkata, 17th September. Nitin Gadkari, the union minister, has said that there is a need to lower logistics costs in the nation, which are higher than those of China, the US, and European nations.
The goal is to make waterways a popular mode of transportation for passengers and goods, which will help reduce the country’s annual import cost of petrol and diesel, which is around Rs 16 lakh crore.
“Our top priority is waterways, followed by railways, roads, and finally aviation. Lowering logistics costs will help in job creation in the country,” he said this on Friday evening, at a program hosted by Young Indians and the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India.
Logistics cost in India as a percentage of GDP is 16 percent, which is very high, Gadkari said, adding that it is ten percent in China, and nearly eight percent in the US and Europe.
Gadkari, the minister of road transport and highways, stated that the Prime Minister Gati Shakti program will help in coordination among various departments and the development of a common right of way.
“There is a need to connect rail and road transport with the waterways,” Gadkari said.
He said that increasing the use of sustainable fuels such as bio-diesel and bio-CNG will help in the substitution of petrol and diesel imports.
Gadkari also emphasized the importance of increasing sugarcane and bamboo cultivation for the production of low-cost fuels such as ethanol and bio-ethanol, adding that the move will reduce pollution.
The minister stated that the government desires a corruption-free system in order to expedite decision making.
