New Delhi, 31st March: Tennis icon Leander Paes has joined the Bharatiya Janata Party, marking a fresh political shift ahead of key electoral battles in states like West Bengal and Goa.

Paes, who had earlier been associated with the Trinamool Congress, described his entry into the BJP as a “responsibility” and expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and senior party leaders.

“It’s a big day of my life. I want to serve the people and youth of this country,” Paes said after joining the party.

The tennis legend had briefly engaged with TMC politics during the party’s expansion efforts in Goa in 2021, under the strategic guidance of Prashant Kishor. However, the party’s attempt to gain ground in Goa did not succeed.

Paes, a former Olympic bronze medallist and one of India’s most decorated tennis players, said his focus would now be on youth empowerment and sports development.

Highlighting gaps in infrastructure, he pointed out the lack of indoor tennis courts in India and called for reforms, including equal pay for male and female athletes and improved sports education.

Union Minister Kiren Rijiju termed Paes’ entry into the BJP as “historic,” noting that the athlete was inspired by the government’s initiatives in sports, including the Khelo India movement.

Paes, who has won 18 Grand Slam titles and an Olympic medal, was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 2024, cementing his legacy in global tennis.

His political move is being closely watched, particularly with upcoming elections in West Bengal and Goa, where his presence could add visibility to the BJP’s campaign outreach.
