New Delhi, 18th March: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday addressed retiring members of the Rajya Sabha, emphasising that their experience and contributions would continue to shape the nation beyond their parliamentary tenure.
Expressing gratitude, the Prime Minister said such occasions allow the House to rise above party lines and reflect on shared national service. “In politics, there are no full stops; your experience and contribution will forever remain a part of the nation’s life,” he remarked.
Highlighting the role of senior leaders, Modi urged younger parliamentarians to draw inspiration from veterans like H. D. Deve Gowda, Mallikarjun Kharge, and Sharad Pawar. He also praised Deputy Chairman Harivansh Narayan Singh for his calm conduct and ability to maintain the trust of the House during challenging situations.
“There is much to learn from these senior leaders about staying entirely committed to the responsibilities given by society,” the Prime Minister noted.
Reflecting on parliamentary traditions, Modi said that despite the pressures of a 24×7 media environment, the culture of wit and meaningful exchange continues to define the House. He added that the biennial retirement cycle ensures continuity and knowledge transfer within the institution. “The legacy here is a continuous process that enriches our parliamentary system,” he said.
Underscoring the significance of the Upper House, the Prime Minister highlighted the concept of a “second opinion” as a cornerstone of India’s legislative strength. He said the review and deliberation process between the two Houses adds depth and refinement to policymaking. “This second opinion is a massive contribution to our democracy that we must cherish,” Modi stated.
The Prime Minister also pointed out that the retiring members had the unique distinction of serving in both the old and new Parliament buildings, calling it a historic phase in their careers. Describing Parliament as a “Great Open University,” he said the six-year tenure provides invaluable lessons in governance and public service.
“The six years spent here are invaluable for shaping one’s contribution to the nation and for self-growth,” he said.
Concluding his address, Modi expressed confidence that the departing members would continue contributing to nation-building, whether within formal political roles or through independent social initiatives. “I once again salute and glorify the contributions of all the retiring members,” he said.
