New Delhi, 17th March: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday released its first list of 144 candidates for the upcoming West Bengal Assembly Elections 2026, marking a major step in the party’s election preparations in the state.
The list was finalised during a meeting of the BJP Central Election Committee held on March 12, chaired by senior party leader Nitin Nabin. The meeting was attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Home Minister Amit Shah, and other senior leaders of the party.
The party has fielded candidates across key constituencies in North Bengal, South Bengal and urban centres, aiming to strengthen its electoral presence in the state.
Among prominent names, Suvendu Adhikari has been fielded from Nandigram and Bhabanipur, while senior leader Dilip Ghosh will contest from Kharagpur Sadar and Bolpur. BJP leader Agnimitra Paul has been named candidate from Asansol Dakshin.
In North Bengal, candidates such as Sukumar Roy (Coochbehar Uttar), Savitri Barman (Sitalkuchi) and Ajay Roy (Dinhata) have been nominated, reflecting the party’s focus on strengthening its base in the region.
The list also includes candidates from reserved constituencies, with representation from Scheduled Castes (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST) seats such as Kumargram, Kalchini, Phansidewa, Tapan and Habibpur, among others.
In urban and semi-urban constituencies, the BJP has fielded candidates in key seats like Siliguri, Baranagar, Howrah Uttar, Rashbehari and Diamond Harbour, indicating a balanced strategy across regions.
The announcement signals the BJP’s early push in the electoral battle in West Bengal, where it is aiming to expand its footprint and challenge the ruling dispensation.
With the release of the first list, political activity in the state is expected to intensify, as parties gear up for a high-stakes contest in the West Bengal Assembly Elections 2026.
