New Delhi, 14th March: President Droupadi Murmu on Friday said that persons with disabilities are equal partners in India’s journey toward becoming a developed nation by 2047, as Rashtrapati Bhavan hosted the Purple Fest to celebrate the talent, achievements and aspirations of Divyangjan.

The day-long celebration saw over 8,000 Divyangjan visiting Amrit Udyan, which was opened exclusively for them. Participants took part in several recreational games and learning activities through stalls set up by organisations working for the empowerment and welfare of persons with disabilities.

In the evening, the President attended the festival and witnessed cultural performances presented by Divyangjan at the Open Air Theatre in the President’s Estate.

Addressing the gathering, President Murmu said that a nation or society is not defined merely by what it has achieved for its privileged sections, but by how sensitively it treats its marginalized communities. She emphasized that values of inclusivity, harmony and compassion have long been part of India’s cultural and civilizational ethos.

The President noted that the Constitution of India upholds the ideals of social justice, equality of status and dignity for every individual. She also highlighted that the Directive Principles of State Policy provide for the rights of Divyangjan to education, work and public assistance.

President Murmu stressed that the empowerment of persons with disabilities is essential for building an inclusive society. She added that this goal cannot be achieved by government efforts alone and requires the active involvement of society, institutions and individuals.

“We are moving forward with the collective goal of ‘Viksit Bharat’ by the year 2047 and Divyangjan are equal partners in this journey,” the President said, urging society to ensure equal opportunities and dignity for persons with disabilities.

Encouraging Divyangjan to move ahead with confidence, she assured them of the government’s continued support. She said their determination, hard work and dedication will not only lead them toward personal success but will also inspire others across the country.

The Purple Fest, organised by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, aims to raise awareness about different disabilities and promote understanding, acceptance and inclusion of persons with disabilities in society.
