Kochi, 11th March: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday inaugurated and laid the foundation stone for multiple development projects worth around ₹11,000 crore in Kochi, aimed at strengthening infrastructure, boosting industry and improving connectivity across Kerala.
Addressing a gathering in the coastal city, the Prime Minister said the projects would promote industrial growth, boost tourism and enhance the ease of living for people in Kerala.
“Coming to Kochi is always a magnificent experience. I extend my heartiest congratulations to the people of Kerala for these projects,” Modi said.
A key highlight of the event was the foundation stone for a Polypropylene Unit at the Kochi Refinery, which is expected to produce around four lakh tonnes annually. The facility will support industries such as packaging, textiles and medical devices.
Emphasising the importance of strengthening India’s energy infrastructure, the Prime Minister said the expansion of the petroleum sector is essential for the Make in India initiative and for building a self-reliant India.
The Prime Minister also laid the foundation stone for a 50 MW Floating Solar Project at West Kallada in Kollam district, aimed at expanding renewable energy capacity in the state.
Noting Kerala’s large number of water bodies, Modi said the state has significant potential for floating solar power generation.
“It is our endeavour that Kerala moves further ahead in solar power generation,” he said.
The Prime Minister also highlighted developments in the railway sector, including modernisation under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme at Shoranur Junction, Kuttippuram and Changanassery.
He also referred to the electrification of the Shoranur–Nilambur railway line and the launch of a new train service between Palakkad and Pollachi, which will strengthen rail connectivity between Kerala and neighbouring Tamil Nadu.
In the road infrastructure sector, the Prime Minister pointed to major six-lane highway projects, including the Kozhikode Bypass, which are expected to reduce congestion and improve travel time across the region.
He added that improved connectivity to key locations such as Azhikkal Port would benefit farmers, traders and tourism in the state.
Highlighting the Centre’s focus on infrastructure investment, Modi said India is receiving global recognition for its push toward modern infrastructure development.
“Today the world praises India for its investments in modern infrastructure. This year’s Union Budget has also allocated record funds for infrastructure,” he said.
The Prime Minister emphasised that investments in infrastructure generate large-scale employment opportunities for the youth and accelerate economic development.
Expressing confidence in Kerala’s growth prospects, Modi said the projects launched in Kochi would play a crucial role in achieving the vision of a ‘Viksit Kerala’, aligned with the broader national goal of a developed India.
